    Summary
Enables DNA-binding transcription repressor activity, RNA polymerase II-specific and cis-regulatory region sequence-specific DNA binding activity. Involved in several processes, including generation of neurons; regulation of gene expression; and sex determination, establishment of X:A ratio. Located in cytosol and nucleus. Is expressed in several structures, including ectoderm; embryonic/larval optic lobe; extended germ band embryo; neuroblasts; and presumptive embryonic/larval nervous system. Used to study brain cancer. Orthologous to several human genes including HES1 (hes family bHLH transcription factor 1). [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Apr 2022]
