Patellofemoral pain syndrome is common among adolescents and young adults. The most common symptom is pain surrounding the kneecap when sitting with bent knees for prolonged periods of time or when performing activities like ascending or descending stairs, squatting or athletic activities. This review of pharmacological interventions showed that non‐steroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may reduce pain in the short term, but overall pain did not improve after three months. There is conflicting evidence on the effect of glycosaminoglycan polysulphate. The anabolic steroid nandrolone may be effective, but associated risks demand extreme caution if used for patellofemoral pain syndrome, particularly in athletes.

The Achilles tendon connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. Painful and stiff Achilles tendons are common overuse injuries in people undertaking sports, such as running, but also occur for other reasons in inactive people. The underlying cause is an imbalance between the damage and repair processes in the tendon. Painful Achilles tendons are often disabling and can take a long time to get better. Many treatments exist for this condition and this review set out to find out whether treatment with an injection, with a variety of agents, decreases pain and allows people to return to their previous activities.

Heparin and related substances, including glycosaminoglycans, chondroitin, low‐molecular‐weight heparin (LMWH), heparinoids, heparitin sulfate, hyaluronic acid and keratan sulphate, have been demonstrated a few positive effects on delaying the progression of diabetic kidney disease (DKD). This review looked for randomised studies assessing the effect of heparin and related substances on preventing the onset of DKD. No study was available. Well designed and high quality randomised studies that address this issue are needed.
