Terms to know

Ankle
The region of the lower limb between the foot and the leg.
Ankle Fracture (Broken Ankle)
An ankle fracture is a break of the ankle bones.
Bone
A living, growing tissue made mostly of collagen.
Closed Fracture (Simple Fracture)
A traumatic break to the bone in which the bone has not broken through the skin.
Compression Fracture
A type of break in a bone caused by pressure and in which the bone collapses. Compression fractures usually occur in the spine (backbone) and in bones made weak by cancer or by osteoporosis (a decrease in bone mass and density).
Displaced Fracture
A fracture in which the two ends of the broken bone are separated from one another.
Extremities (Limbs)
Body limbs, consisting of right upper and lower (arm and leg) and left upper and lower (arm and leg).
Fibula (Calf Bone)
The fibula or calf bone is a leg bone located on the side of the tibia, with which it is connected above and below. It is the smaller of the two bones, and, in proportion to its length, the slenderest of all the long bones.
Lateral
The left or right of the body; further from the midline.
Medial
In or near the middle; not at either end. Pertaining to the inside.
Open Fracture (Compound Fracture)
A traumatic break to the bone in which the bone has broken through the skin.
Shoulder Fracture (Fractured Shoulder)
A traumatic break in one or more of the bones that compose the shoulder joint.
Stress Fracture (Hairline Fracture)
A fracture of the bone caused by repeated stress over time. Instead of resulting from a single severe impact, stress fractures are the result of accumulated trauma. Stress fractures can be described as a very small sliver or crack in the bone.
Talus (Ankle Bone)
The bone of the foot that connects with the tibia and fibula to form the ankle joint.
Tibia (Shin Bone)
The larger of two bones between the knee and ankle. Also called shinbone.
