Vagina

The muscular canal that goes from the uterus to the outside of the body. During birth, the baby passes through the vagina.

Terms to know

Cervical Cap
The cervical cap is a form of barrier contraception. A cervical cap fits over the cervix and blocks sperm from entering the uterus.
Cervix
The lower, narrow end of the uterus that forms a canal between the uterus and vagina.
Contraceptive Diaphragm
The diaphragm is a cervical barrier type of birth control. It is a soft latex or silicone dome with a spring molded into the rim. The spring creates a seal against the walls of the vagina.
Contraceptive Sponge
The contraceptive sponge combines barrier and spermicidal methods to prevent conception. The sponges are inserted vaginally prior to intercourse and must be placed over the cervix to be effective.
Endometrium
The layer of tissue that lines the uterus.
Fallopian Tubes
A slender tube through which eggs pass from an ovary to the uterus. In the female reproductive tract, there is one ovary and one fallopian tube on each side of the uterus.
Myometrium
The muscular outer layer of the uterus.
Ovaries
The ovaries are a pair of female reproductive glands in which the ova, or eggs, are formed. The ovaries are located in the pelvis, one on each side of the uterus.
Uterus (Womb)
The small, hollow, pear-shaped organ in a woman's pelvis. This is the organ in which a fetus develops. Also called womb.
Vulva
The external female genital organs, including the clitoris, vaginal lips, and the opening to the vagina.
