ACE inhibitor

Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors.

AF

Atrial fibrillation.

ARVD

Arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia.

BNP

B-type natriuretic peptide.

Bridge to transplantation

Mechanical support for the heart pending heart transplantation.

Brugada syndrome

Syndrome characterised by a structurally normal heart but a propensity to the potentially life-threatening heart rhythm problem, ventricular fibrillation.

CABG

Coronary artery bypass grafting.

CHD

Coronary heart disease.

CHF

Chronic heart failure.

CI

Confidence interval.

CMRI

Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging.

CRG

Consensus reference group.

CTR

Cardiothoracic ratio.

CXR

Chest X-ray.

DSMB

Data and safety monitoring board.

ECFV

Extra cellular fluid volume.

ECG

Electrocardiogram.

Exercise performance

Level of physical activity.

FEV1

Forced expiratory volume in one second.

FS

Fractional shortening.

Forced vital capacity.

Relating to the circulation of the blood.

Hibernation

Heart muscle that is not contracting but still alive and may recover function if its blood supply is restored.

HBI

Home-based intervention.

HF

Heart failure.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

Heart abnormality characterised by thickening of the heart muscle due to a genetic cause.

ICD

Implantable cardioverter defibrillator.

INR

International normalised ratio.

Ischaemia

Insufficient blood supply to an organ or tissue.

ISDN+Hyd

Isosorbide dinitrate and hydralazine.

K+

Potassium.

LBBB

Left bundle branch block.

Long QT syndrome

Syndrome with a characteristic change on the electrocardiogram, and a propensity to serious heart rhythm problems.

LV

Left ventricular.

LVADs

Left ventricular assist devices.

LVEF

Left ventricular ejection fraction.

LVSD

Left ventricular systolic dysfunction.

MI

Myocardial infarction.

Right bundle branch block.

Rehabilitation

Process to assist patients to achieve optimal function. May include a period of exercise training.

RNVG

Radionuclide ventriculography.

Syncope

Blackout.

Tetralogy of Fallot

A type of congenital heart disease.

Titration

The administration of small incremental doses of a drug until a desired clinical effect is observed.

Ventricular fibrillation

A type of serious heart rhythm problem with very rapid, irregular and uncoordinated electrical activity of the ventricles.

Ventricular tachycardia

A type of serious heart rhythm problem arising in the ventricles resulting in (usually) very rapid contraction of the ventricles.

Viable myocardium

Heart muscle that is still alive but may not be contracting.

VO2

Oxygen uptake.

WMI

Wall motion index (an echocardiographic scoring system for assessing the function of the left ventricle).
