Sputum smear-positive (“Smear positive”)

Respiratory tuberculosis in which mycobacteria (‘acid-fast bacilli’, AFB) have been seen in a stained smear of sputum examined under a microscope. Confirmation of the diagnosis requires culture to differentiate the organisms from atypical mycobacteria (those which are not in the M. Tuberculosis complex). (Source: www.hpa.org.uk)
