Figure C shows the flow of study identification and selection for literature search 2. The initial database search resulted in 113 records from Medline, 31 records from Central, 385 records from Scopus. An additional 24 records were identified through manual searching from other sources and the updated litertature search identified 42 records. After duplicates were removed, there were 559 unique citations eligible for title and abstract screening. The first phase of screening excluded 462 records for the following reasons: 144 records were not systematic review, study or trial; 18 records were reports conducted outside of humans; 34 records were reports which did not evaluate orthopedic surgeries of interest; 264 records were reports which did not evaluate a comparison of interest; 2 records were publications prior to 1980. This process left 97 records to be assessed for eligibility by screening the full-text articles. The second phase of screening excluded 91 articles for the following reasons: 1 record was a duplicate publication; 25 records were not systematic review, study or trial; 1 record was a report conducted outside of humans; 24 records were reports which did not evaluate orthopedic surgeries of interest; 9 records were uncontrolled studies; 27 records were reports which did not evaluate a comparison of interest; 4 records did not report outcomes of interest. 6 articles were included in the report. Of the 6 articles included, 4 were meta-analyses and 2 were randomized control trial.
