Five trials were included in the analysis with two trials contributing to two separate comparisons presented individually here. The first trial by Fitzgerald and colleagues in 2001 provided a relative risk of 0.57 with a 95 percent confidence interval of 0.42 to 0.76. The second trial by Hull and colleagues in 2000 included two separate comparisons. The first comparison provided a relative risk of 0.45 with a 95 percent confidence interval of 0.30 to 0.67. The second comparison provided a relative risk of 0.55 with a 95 percent confidence interval of 0.37 to 0.80. The third trial by Francis and colleagues in 1997 provided a relative risk of 0.57 with a 95 percent confidence interval of 0.37 to 0.85. The fourth trial by Leclerc and colleagues in 1996 provided a relative risk of 0.69 with a 95 percent confidence interval of 0.54 to 0.89. The fifth trial by Hull and colleagues in 1993 included two separate comparisons. The first comparison provided a relative risk of 0.89 with a 95 percent confidence interval of 0.67 to 1.19. The second comparison provided a relative risk of 0.82 with a 95 percent confidence interval of 0.69 to 0.97. The combined effect of the five trials showed a relative risk of 0.66 with a 95 percent confidence interval of 0.55 to 0.79. The I-squared value was 60.9 percent and the Egger's p-value was 0.033.
