Chronic kidney disease

Previously known as chronic renal failure (CRF), or chronic renal insufficiency. The stages of chronic kidney disease are as follows:

Stage 1: kidney damage but normal kidney function (GFR > 90 ml/min/m2)

Stage 2: mild decrease of GFR (60–89 ml/min/m2)

Stage 3: moderate decrease of GFR (30–59 ml/min/m2)

Stage 4: severe decrease in GFR (15–29 ml/min/m2)

Stage 5: kidney failure (GFR < 15 ml/min/m2 or dialysis)1
