Just like other tissues and organs in our body, bones can be affected by medical conditions too. These include things like fractures, signs of wear and tear, inflammations and cancer. Injuries and fractures are common in younger people. As we grow older, diseases like osteoporosis and osteoarthritis are more likely to develop. Various tests and examinations can be used to find out what is causing problems like pain or difficulties moving.

In this review, researchers from The Cochrane Collaboration examined a comparison between the Bishop score and any other method for checking pre‐induction cervical ripening in women admitted for induction of labour. The Bishop score is the traditional method of determining the readiness of the cervix to open (dilate) before labour induction. It also assesses the position, softening and shortening of the cervix, and the location of the presenting part of the baby. After searching for relevant trials up to 31 March 2015, we included two randomised controlled trials that recruited 234 pregnant women.

Cervical cancer arises from the neck of the womb (cervix). Cervical screening programmes have decreased the rate of advanced cervical cancer. However, a significant number of cases still present with locally advanced disease that involves large cervical tumours (> 4 cm) or tumours that extend to the upper vagina. The larger the primary tumour, the greater the likelihood of metastasis (spread of cancer to other areas of the body). Cervical cancer spreads to the lymph nodes in the pelvis and around the aorta (one of the major blood vessels in the abdomen). Stage is a standardised assessment of the size of the cancer and if it has spread to adjacent or distant sites. Stage for stage, women with para‐aortic lymph node metastases at presentation have a lower survival than those who do not have para‐aortic metastases at presentation.

Each year approximately one million people receive a tube feeding (gastric tube) in the US. Gastric tubes are commonly used for giving drugs and nutrition directly into the gastrointestinal tract (tube that digests food) for people who are unable to swallow. Feeding via a tube that is misplaced in the trachea (wind pipe) can result in severe pneumonia (infection of the lungs). Therefore, confirmation of tube placement in the stomach after tube insertion is important. Gastric tubes are also used to reduce the pressure of the stomach after providing breathing assistance through masks, which is mainly used in resuscitation. Medical ultrasound is one of the diagnostic imaging techniques using sound waves to create images of the inside of the body. Recent studies suggest that ultrasound provides good diagnostic accuracy in the confirmation of appropriate tube placement. Hence, ultrasound could provide a promising alternative to X‐rays in confirming tube placement, especially where X‐ray facilities are unavailable or difficult to access.

Psoriatic arthritis is a condition that leads to pain and stiffness in joints. It can be caused by psoriasis, but sometimes occurs in people who don't have any visible psoriasis-related skin changes. Various treatments can relieve the symptoms and prevent damage to the joints. It is estimated that 20% of people who have psoriasis also develop pain and inflammation in certain joints at some point. The joints start hurting and may feel stiff for a while, particularly in the morning. Movement often makes the stiffness disappear within half an hour. The affected joints may also become swollen, feel warm and sensitive to the touch. If the small joints between the vertebrae (spine bones) are inflamed, it might cause back pain.Psoriatic arthritis can occur in many joints of the body. It often affects the hands, feet, elbows, knees, neck or vertebrae. More than five joints typically become inflamed, including the joints at the end of the fingers and toes. These joints are especially prone to becoming deformed in severe cases. Tendons and tendon sheaths can also become inflamed. Most people who have psoriatic arthritis also have nail psoriasis. This can lead to small dents in the nails, which may become thicker, change color or start peeling off too. Nail psoriasis is difficult to treat and sometimes mistaken for a fungal nail infection.
