Certified medical oncologists are required to have excellent skills in chemotherapy, palliative care, second-opinion consultation, and the conducting of clinical trials. The Japanese Society of Medical Oncology has just started its certification system in 2006, and 126 clinical oncologists have been cumulatively certified. They have had an important role in facilitating better cancer practice, education and system innovation in their own institutions in cooperation with some government initiatives in Japan.
