How do I use the Citation Validator?

Use the PubMed Citation Validator to check your XML file before uploading it to the FTP site. The Citation Validator has two options: input and upload. The size of your file determines which option is better for you.

Files without errors will display the citations as they will appear in PubMed. Files with errors will produce an error report displaying the error message and the line number in the file where the error occurs.

The Citation Validator uses a strict syntax. Errors in one part of a file will affect how the program validates the rest of the file. The best approach is to check the lines around an error, fix the syntax errors, and validate the file again.

Common errors include:

The validator error messages are designed to be self-explanatory and are the same as those in the loader report. If you are having difficulty understanding the error messages, please contact publisher@ncbi.nlm.nih.gov.
