Bacterial sporulation: a question of commitment?

Abstract

Starved Bacillus subtilis cells monitor environmental conditions and intracellular events before committing to sporulation. The precise identity of the sporulation-inducing signals is an open question, but recent results suggest strategies by which Bacillus integrates diverse signals in the decision-making process.
