Metabolic monitoring in nutrition support

Nurs Clin North Am. 1997 Dec;32(4):741-53.

Abstract

Metabolic monitoring of patients receiving parenteral or enteral nutrition support is an important component in providing safe, effective therapy using these modalities. The nurse is the first line observer of how the patient is responding and tolerating this therapy. This article provides the nurse with information about the most common and critical complications related to nutrition support. It also explains the nurse's role in monitoring and intervening when complications occur.
