The trials and tribulations of growth arrest

Trends Microbiol. 1995 Apr;3(4):131-6. doi: 10.1016/s0966-842x(00)88901-5.

Abstract

It is perhaps surprising to learn that many individual genes and global regulatory networks of Escherichia coli are induced as growth of the cells ceases. Insight into the trials and tribulations of the growth-arrested state is being gained from recent data on the regulation of the genes and networks, and on the cellular functions of proteins essential for surviving stasis.
