Lab Anim Sci. 1980 Apr;30(2 Pt 2):283-90.

Economic and technical considerations in the production of laboratory rodents.

Laboratory animal production costs include capital investment, operating expenses and the cost of money required to fund capital cost. Increased cost is associated with the sophistication of the building design and the degree of health monitoring required. Increasing regulations have the potential of increasing costs without improving the quality or welfare of the animals.
