Abstract

The light birefringence in the surface layer of erythrocytes has been determined. A mathematical expression for the phase difference caused by birefringence in the spherical layer has been derived. Thickness of the anisotropic layer of erythrocytes has been evaluated. Birefringence in surface layers of erythrocytes has been shown to be caused not only by the membrane, but also by close to it structured proteins.
