[Effect of cimetidine on the course of measles].

[Article in Turkish]

Cimetidine as an antagonist to histamine-2-(H2) receptor or an H2 blocker has been used in acid peptic ulcer. Its immunomodulatory effect on cell mediated immunity has recently been found. Cimetidine was also tried in herpes virus infections because its possible antiviral effect. But until now there has been no report on the use of cimetidine in measles. This study shows that cimetidine provides a sooner recovery from the symptoms of measles. Seven patients who received cimetidine had a dramatic improvement and no side effect of the drug was observed. Measles is still a serious problem in our country for undernourished infants and our try suggests that cimetidine can be used in this viral disease to shorten the course.
