Excerpt

This guideline contains recommendations about general principles for managing intravenous (IV) fluids in children and young people under 16 years, and applies to a range of conditions and different settings. It does not include recommendations relating to specific conditions. Recommendations on the management of intravenous fluids in adults (from their 16th birthday) in hospital settings can be found in NICE clinical guideline 174 IV fluids in adults. Healthcare professionals should use their clinical judgement when managing young people transitioning between paediatric and adult services and paediatric and adult healthcare teams should work together to provide assessment and services to young people who need IV fluids. Diagnosis and management should be reviewed throughout the transition process, and there should be clarity about who is the lead clinician to ensure continuity of care.
