Extracapsular cataract and lens implant surgery in developing countries: keeping it simple

Ophthalmic Surg. 1990 Jun;21(6):447-52.

Abstract

Extracapsular cataract extraction and posterior chamber lens implantation would be the ideal method of rehabilitating the cataract blind of the developing world. However, these procedures usually have been considered too complex, time-consuming, and "high tech" to be used in these areas of the world. We argue that, in the context of an appropriate support program, they can be performed rapidly and safely using a few simple, manual instruments.
