Plasmalemmal and intracellular potassium channels are elements of signaling pathways which can protect as well as damage cells. Under physiological conditions they are regulated by changes in the: specific ligands (such as ATP), pH, pressure, temperature, reactive oxygen species, phosphorylation, hormones and others. More and more papers show that in this regulation are also implicated the lipid components of the membranes, in which the channels can be found. The article is a summary of the current knowledge concerning the regulation of potassium channels by fatty acids and their metabolites.
