Residential therapy. Hospitals take on finding housing for homeless patients, hoping to reduce readmissions, lower costs.


As they grapple with containing the cost of caring for patients who frequently return to the ER or hospital for care, some hospitals are trying a new route: housing. In San Francisco, plans are under way to house 50 homeless patients. "Hospitalization is a failure of the medical system. It means that the condition has gotten so out of control that someone is at risk of life or limb," says Dr. Kelly Pfeifer, left, of the San Francisco Health Plan.
