Tools for the Job: The POMR in Preventive Medicine.

Abstract

There is increasing interest in practical preventive care in the family doctor's office. The concepts underlying the problem oriented medical record (POMR) include the principles of preventive medicine, and it is thus an excellent vehicle for implementation. However, the classical POMR model must be modified to the context of family practice, and priorities defined by each practice. This article describes how elements of the POMR can be used in planning preventive care. An appraisal of one's own practice is a valuable part of the planning; follow up can assess patient compliance and the effectiveness of the program.
