Human immunoglobulin chains are encoded by variable, diversity, joining and constant gene segments localized on chromosomes 2, 22 (light chains) and 14 (heavy chains). An extensive genetic polymorphism exists as revealed by restriction fragment length polymorphism of the different genes. These new markers allow a more precise delineation of the evolution of the immune system and of genes linked to disease susceptibility.
