The "salutogenic" approach--designing a health-promoting hospital environment.

Author information

Design and Heath Group.

Hospitals are supposed to be places of healing and recovery, where the unwell go to get well again. But in many cases the healing environment is anything but--"wellness" has given way to functionality, potentially hampering not only the recovery of patients but also the productivity and efficiency of the hospital itself. Most health care facilities have been designed around the treatment of disease--with rooms full of the latest equipment; they appear to be state-of-the-art, treatment at its finest. But what we really need to ask is; is it a healthy building?
