Optical alignment of azo-polymer-stabilized nematic liquid crystals

Opt Lett. 1999 Dec 15;24(24):1865-7. doi: 10.1364/ol.24.001865.

Abstract

Optical alignment and strong residual birefringence in a nematic liquid crystal that is stabilized by a polymer network are described. The polymer's main chain contains an azo dye, which is responsible for the repulsion of the axis of the guest-host system from the electric field of the excitation light.
