The future of the palliative medicine fellowship.

Abstract

The field of palliative medicine has grown rapidly in recent years, and its growth has been accompanied by increasing interest in palliative care education. This editorial suggests that the field's growth to date has been aided by palliative medicine training programs that are based on an "apprentice" model. However, if the field of palliative medicine is to enjoy continued growth in the future, this model will be insufficient. Instead, it will be essential that palliative care training programs shift to a more traditional "academic" model of postgraduate education.
