Abstract

FUNDAMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS: Addition to our medical knowledge of chronic gastritis and its sequelae; changes in nomenclature.

METHODS/CONTENT:

Presentation of the pathophysiological situation (processes) oft colonization of the gastric mucosa by Helicobacter pylori with particular consideration being given to histomorphological findings. Discussion of the relative risk of gastritis patients contracting a gastric or duodenal ulcer, or possibly developing carcinoma of the stomach.

CONCLUSIONS:

On account of the possible sequela of ulcer and its potential complications, and also the presumably elevated risk of carcinoma, Helicobacter pylori associated chronic gastritis should be submitted to a diagnostic work-up and then treated.
