Katiwala program: an alternative solution to the health problem

Popul Forum. 1981;7(3):2-6.

Abstract

PIP: The "Katiwala" is a voluntary village health service project in the Philippines. Most often she is a mother who has some free time for the service of the community. She is a motivator for immunization, family planning, and better sanitation. Officially, she is part of a corps of 169 grassroot primary health care workers fielded by the Davao Medical School Foundation, Inc. in 8 provinces and 2 cities. Attention is paid to malnutrition which 49.1% (second degree) and 4.4% (third degree) of the preschool children suffer from. The Katiwala began in 1968 and in 1969 it was adopted as a component in regional development. The basic strategy is the training of village health workers. A crucial aspect of the Katiwala's work is her ability to perform paramedical roles and to encourage community participation.
