Grassroots women activists may live vastly different lives in far-flung areas of the world, but they all exhibit the spirit and determination necessary to challenge the problems facing them, their families, and their communities. Three women from Thailand involved in grassroots advocacy will be attending the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women. One woman struggled against a government relocation scheme that would have ruined the forest upon which her village depended. Another related ecological problems to social ills in her village. A third has broken the cycle of family violence in her home. The entire group of 40 representatives from Thailand attended a number of preparatory grassroots meetings before heading to Beijing. The main message they will be carrying to the Conference and to the Thai government is that "Women must have the rights and opportunities to participate in all levels of decision-making processes." The Thai women will also be relaying opinions on each of the six issues on the Conference agenda. This Conference will represent the first time that a group of Thai women of this size will have the opportunity to express themselves in an international forum. The Thai women will also have the opportunity to learn from other women from around the world.
