Asia-Pacific POPIN Consultative Workshop.

[No authors listed]

The Asia-Pacific Population Information Network Consultative Workshop divided participants into 2 technical workshop groups: the Working Group on Computerization and the Working Group on Repackaging and Dissemination. The consulative workshops, held in Bangkok in 1988, concluded with some basic recommendations. Publications related to population information should continue to be distributed and, in many cases, translated from English to the national language. In addition, the workshops agreed on the need for development in these areas: courses that introduce computers, training that promotes familiarization of software products, exposure to microcomputer equipment maintenance, workshops that promote a standardized format for databases and directories of population institutions. Further recommendations addressed the fine tuning of the computerization of POPIN such as the publication of a periodical update of software inventory, guidelines on automation and support in the identification of facilities capable of utilizing POPLINE in the CD-ROM format. Finally, consideration was given to the creation of a telecommunications working group that would be a computer-based information network.
