Although C-reactive protein has been recently recognized as a useful marker of cardiovascular risk, much still needs to be clarified on the reference value among Japanese and predictive value of measuring the marker in hypercholesterolemic subjects. Upper limit of the reference value is found to be 2.0 mg/l among Japanese. CRP levels are influenced by the percentage of body fats. Increased level of C-reactive protein might indicate poor prognosis of the patients. Statin therapy was found to be effective in the primary prevention of cardiovascular events among persons with increased CRP.
