Abstract

Neonatal diabetes, which can be transient or permanent, is rare. The patients typically are small for gestational age and present with hyperglycemia and severe dehydration. Treatment includes administration of insulin and careful blood glucose monitoring. Specific nursing concerns involve issues surrounding blood sugar monitoring, injections, feeding, recognition and treatment of hypoglycemia, insulin adjustment, and parental support.
