The various types of conservation surgery for laryngeal cancer can be systematized in one entity and be classified into four types of "laryngoplasty." Laryngeal cancer involving the arytenoid is thought to be amenable to laryngoplasty type 3. The indication and the procedures of hemilaryngectomy B, subtotal laryngectomy, and subtotal laryngopharyngectomy are described. The therapeutic results of these operations were better than that of total laryngectomy. Tumors involving both sides of the arytenoid portion rule out conservation surgery. They should be treated by the operations of laryngoplasty type 4, which means total laryngectomy and laryngeal reconstruction.
