Abstract

This paper discusses some major findings published over the last decade in the field of lung mechanics and respiratory physiology that could potentially be included in the next guidelines for spirometry. Special comment is made on vital capacity, bronchomotor effect of full lung inflation, bronchodilator tests, expiratory airflow reserve and limitation, and use of the flow-volume loops during exercise tests. New and unconventional interpretative strategies presented in the paper may be of assistance in respiratory diagnosis and choice of therapeutic interventions.
