Egg plant is a herbaceous perennial that grows to a height of 2 to 4 ft. It is economically important and is considered the third most important crop in the family Solanaceae after potato and tomato. Eggplants come in various shapes, color and sizes Solanum melongena is the brinjal eggplant.

S. melongena is an autogamous diploid with 12 chromosomes. It has a genome size of about 1100 Mb which is slightly larger than that of tomato. Despite its importance as a vegetable crop, there was little molecular and genetic information available for it.

Three genetic maps are available in Map Viewer. Detailed information for the maps is available in the BioProject database.
