- Summary:
- This paper focuses on the course of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HHV-2) infection. Herpesvirus takes its persistent form once an individual is infected and recurs from time to time. It will establish its latency in neurons or in white cells. Anogenital herpes, mostly due to herpes simplex virus type 2, with its chronic onset, characterized by recurrent episodes of ulceration and long period latency, which can then cause significant psychosexual morbidity. Transmitted by sexual intercourse, anal intercourse, and urogenital or oro-anal contact with an infected partner, anogenital herpes penetrates the body through a mucous surface or skin abrasion and further spreads to sensory nerves; it remains latent and will recur with or without symptoms. After 2-10 days incubation period, erythema and red papules at the site of viral entry, and irritation, burning and a pricking pain will be experienced by the infected individual. Common sites of lesions in men are the glans penis, prepuce, and penile shaft, while in women they are the vulva, perianal region, vagina, and cervix. Enlarged and painful inguinal glands are common in both sexes; involvement of the urethra is more common in women. Genital HHV-2 infection recurs more frequently than genital HHV-1 infection and emotional stress, trauma, fever, and menstruation trigger recurrence. Complications, management and prevention of prenatal transmission of herpes viruses are also discussed and revised herpes viruses nomenclature is presented in this paper.
