1.

Androstenedione

A delta-4 C19 steroid that is produced not only in the TESTIS, but also in the OVARY and the ADRENAL CORTEX. Depending on the tissue type, androstenedione can serve as a precursor to TESTOSTERONE as well as ESTRONE and ESTRADIOL.

Year introduced: 1974(1973)

2.

Aromatase

An enzyme that catalyzes the desaturation (aromatization) of the ring A of C19 androgens and converts them to C18 estrogens. In this process, the 19-methyl is removed. This enzyme is membrane-bound, located in the endoplasmic reticulum of estrogen-producing cells of ovaries, placenta, testes, adipose, and brain tissues. Aromatase is encoded by the CYP19 gene, and functions in complex with NADPH-FERRIHEMOPROTEIN REDUCTASE in the cytochrome P-450 system.

Year introduced: 1986(1975)

3.

steroid 15-alpha-hydroxylase [Supplementary Concept]

a heme-thiolate enzyme (cytochrome P-450) that catalyzes 15-alpha hydroxylation of testosterone, androstenedione, and progesterone

Date introduced: November 21, 1986

4.

androstenedione 17-alpha-oxidoreductase [Supplementary Concept]

forms epitestosterone; was mapped to TESTOSTERONE DEHYDROGENASES (85-93); Index Medicus see under 17-HYDROXYSTEROID DEHYDROGENASES (85-90)

Date introduced: August 2, 1985

RefSeq NM_019184

Date introduced: August 14, 2002

7.

4-phenoxy-7-phenylthio-4-androstene-3,17-dione [Supplementary Concept]

structure given in first source

Date introduced: November 7, 1995

8.

3,17-dioxo-4-androsten-19-oic acid [Supplementary Concept]

major metabolite & possible precursor for the formationof C18 neutral steroids; structure given in first source

Date introduced: December 24, 1991

9.

cholestenone 5 beta-reductase [Supplementary Concept]

a liver enzyme; may be same protein as EC 1.3.1.3

Date introduced: April 21, 1987

10.

polyandroalbumin [Supplementary Concept]

steroid hapten-protein conjugate used for immunization of ewes to improve fecundity

Date introduced: August 14, 1984

11.

plomestane [Supplementary Concept]

selective inhibitor of aromatization in human breast tissue; may provide a mechanism for controlling estrogen responsive processes

Date introduced: January 12, 1982

12.

steroid hormone 7-alpha-hydroxylase [Supplementary Concept]

a microsomal enzyme highly active in 7-alpha-hydroxylation of testosterone, androtenedione, progesterone, and a variety of structurally unrelated compounds including fatty acids and xenobiotics; encoded by genes in the CYP2A subfamily

Date introduced: April 20, 1981
