Malignant melanoma

Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer. Often the first sign of melanoma is a change in the size, shape, color, or feel of a mole. Most melanomas have a black or black-blue area. Melanoma may also appear as a new mole. It may be black, abnormal, or ugly looking.. Thinking of ABCDE can help you remember what to watch for:. - Asymmetry - the shape of one half does not match the other. - Border - the edges are ragged, blurred or irregular. - Color - the color is uneven and may include shades of black, brown and tan. - Diameter - there is a change in size, usually an increase. -Evolving - the mole has changed over the past few weeks or months. Surgery is the first treatment of all stages of melanoma. Other treatments include chemotherapy and radiation, biologic, and targeted therapies. Biologic therapy boosts your body's own ability to fight cancer. Targeted therapy uses substances that attack cancer cells without harming normal cells. Cutaneous melanoma

The presence of a melanoma of the skin. [from HPO]

Finding
5.

Melanoma

The presence of a melanoma, a malignant cancer originating from pigment producing melanocytes. Melanoma can originate from the skin or the pigmented layers of the eye (the uvea). [from HPO]

MedGen UID:

Concept ID:
CN002586
Finding
6.

Mutant

An altered form of an individual, organism, population, or genetic character that differs from the corresponding wild type due to one or more alterations (mutations). [from NCI]

Cell or Molecular Dysfunction
7.

Malignant melanoma of skin

A primary melanoma arising from atypical melanocytes in the skin. Precursor lesions include acquired and congenital melanocytic nevi, and dysplastic nevi. Several histologic variants have been recognized, including superficial spreading melanoma, acral lentiginous melanoma, nodular melanoma, and lentigo maligna melanoma. [from NCI]

Insulin

Insulin (51 aa, ~6 kDa) is encoded by the human INS gene. This protein is involved in the direct regulation of glucose metabolism. [from NCI]

Neoplasm

A malignant tumor at the original site of growth. [from NCI]

MedGen UID:

Concept ID:
C1306459
Finding; Neoplastic Process
11.

Fibrinogen

Plasma glycoprotein clotted by thrombin, composed of a dimer of three non-identical pairs of polypeptide chains (alpha, beta, gamma) held together by disulfide bonds. Fibrinogen clotting is a sol-gel change involving complex molecular arrangements: whereas fibrinogen is cleaved by thrombin to form polypeptides A and B, the proteolytic action of other enzymes yields different fibrinogen degradation products. [from MeSH]

Mitogens

A soluble substance, usually a protein, that induces mitosis in resting cells, thereby causing cell proliferation. [from NCI]

Neuroendocrine neoplasm

Tumors whose cells possess secretory granules and originate from the neuroectoderm, i.e., the cells of the ectoblast or epiblast that program the neuroendocrine system. Common properties across most neuroendocrine tumors include ectopic hormone production (often via APUD CELLS), the presence of tumor-associated antigens, and isozyme composition. [from MeSH]

Neuroectodermal neoplasm

A neoplasm arising in the neuroectoderm, the portion of the ectoderm of the early embryo that gives rise to the central and peripheral nervous systems, including some glial cells. [from HPO]

Disorder of skin

Your skin is your body's largest organ. It covers and protects your body. Your skin. -Holds body fluids in, preventing dehydration. -Keeps harmful microbes out, preventing infections. -Helps you feel things like heat, cold, and pain. -Keeps your body temperature even. -Makes vitamin D when the sun shines on it. Anything that irritates, clogs, or inflames your skin can cause symptoms such as redness, swelling, burning, and itching. Allergies, irritants, your genetic makeup, and certain diseases and immune system problems can cause rashes, hives, and other skin conditions. Many skin problems, such as acne, also affect your appearance. NIH: National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases.  [from MedlinePlus]
