Concept ID:
C0609246
Amino Acid, Peptide, or Protein; Pharmacologic Substance
2.

Oxytocin

A nonapeptide hormone released from the neurohypophysis (PITUITARY GLAND, POSTERIOR). It differs from VASOPRESSIN by two amino acids at residues 3 and 8. Oxytocin acts on SMOOTH MUSCLE CELLS, such as causing UTERINE CONTRACTIONS and MILK EJECTION. [from MeSH]

MedGen UID:

Concept ID:
C0030095
Amino Acid, Peptide, or Protein; Hormone; Pharmacologic Substance
3.

Oxytocin

Oxytocin (9 aa, ~1 kDa) is encoded by the human OXT gene. This protein plays a role in smooth muscle contraction in both the mammary gland and uterus. Oxytocin also may also be involved in maternal-newborn bonding, cognition and many other psychological and physiological processes. [from NCI]

MedGen UID:

C4082165
Amino Acid, Peptide, or Protein; Hormone; Pharmacologic Substance
4.

Pregnancy

The state or condition of having a developing embryo or fetus in the body (uterus), after union of an ovum and spermatozoon, during the period from conception to birth. [from NCI]

MedGen UID:

Concept ID:
C0032961
Organism Function
5.

Inflammation

A localized protective response resulting from injury or destruction of tissues. Inflammation serves to destroy, dilute, or wall off both the injurious agent and the injured tissue. In the acute phase, inflammation is characterized by the signs of pain, heat, redness, swelling, and loss of function. Histologically, inflammation involves a complex series of events, including dilatation of arterioles, capillaries, and venules, with increased permeability and blood flow; exudation of fluids, including plasma proteins; and leukocyte migration into the site of inflammation. [from NCI]

6.

Asthma

A chronic respiratory disease manifested as difficulty breathing due to the narrowing of bronchial passageways. [from NCI]

MedGen UID:
2109
Concept ID:
C0004096
Disease or Syndrome
7.

Calcium

A basic element found in nearly all organized tissues. It is a member of the alkaline earth family of metals with the atomic symbol Ca, atomic number 20, and atomic weight 40. Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body and combines with phosphorus to form calcium phosphate in the bones and teeth. It is essential for the normal functioning of nerves and muscles and plays a role in blood coagulation (as factor IV) and in many enzymatic processes. [from MeSH]
