1.

paroxetine

A serotonin uptake inhibitor that is effective in the treatment of depression. [from MeSH]

MedGen UID:
74439
Concept ID:
C0070122
Organic Chemical; Pharmacologic Substance
2.

Mirtazapine

A synthetic tetracyclic derivative of the piperazino-azepines with antidepressant activity. Although its mechanism of action is unknown, mirtazapine enhances central adrenergic and serotonergic transmission, possibly by acting as an antagonist at central presynaptic alpha 2 adrenergic inhibitory autoreceptors and heteroreceptors. This agent is a potent antagonist of 5-hydroxytryptamine type 2 (5-HT2), 5-HT3, and histamine 1 (H1) receptors, and a moderate antagonist of peripheral alpha 1 adrenergic and muscarinic receptors. [from NCI]

MedGen UID:
25156
Concept ID:
C0049506
Organic Chemical; Pharmacologic Substance
3.

Depression

A condition characterized by pervasive dysphoric mood, loss of interests, and inability to experience pleasure. [from HPO]

MedGen UID:

Concept ID:
C0011581
Mental or Behavioral Dysfunction
6.

Selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor

Any agent that increases the extracellular level of the neurotransmitter serotonin (5-HT) by inhibiting its reuptake into the presynaptic cell. Increased level in the synaptic cleft prolongs the action of 5-HT on the postsynaptic receptor. This type of agent is typically used as an antidepressant and in the treatment of anxiety disorders and some personality disorders. They are also typically effective and used in treating some cases of insomnia. [from NCI]

MedGen UID:
452467
Concept ID:
C0360105
Pharmacologic Substance
7.

Paroxetine hydrochloride

The hydrochloride salt form of paroxetine, a phenylpiperidine derivative and a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) with antidepressant and anxiolytic properties. Paroxetine binds to the pre-synaptic serotonin transporter complex resulting in negative allosteric modulation of the complex thereby blocking reuptake of serotonin by the pre-synaptic transporter. Inhibition of serotonin recycling enhances serotonergic function through serotonin accumulation in the synaptic cleft, resulting in long-term desensitization and downregulation of 5HT1 (serotonin) receptors and leading to symptomatic relief of depressive illness. [from NCI]
