2.

Serine

A non-essential amino acid in humans (synthesized by the body), Serine is present and functionally important in many proteins. With an alcohol group, serine is needed for the metabolism of fats, fatty acids, and cell membranes; muscle growth; and a healthy immune system. It also plays a major role in pyrimidine, purine, creatine, and porphyrin biosynthetic pathways. Serine is also found at the active site of the serine protease enzyme class that includes trypsin and chymotrypsin. (NCI04) [from NCI]

4.

Peptide hydrolase inhibitor

Any substance that inhibits a protease, an enzyme that breaks peptide bonds. Proteases are required for many cell processes and inhibition of proteases can inhibit viral replication, inflammatory responses, proliferation, and tumor growth. [from NCI]

5.

Trypsin

A serine endopeptidase that is formed from TRYPSINOGEN in the pancreas. It is converted into its active form by ENTEROPEPTIDASE in the small intestine. It catalyzes hydrolysis of the carboxyl group of either arginine or lysine. EC 3.4.21.4. [from MeSH]

Protein secretory trypsin inhibitor

A secreted KAZAL MOTIF-containing serine peptidase inhibitor that inhibits TRYPSIN. It is a protein composed of 56 amino acid residues and is different in amino acid composition and physiological activity from the Kunitz bovine pancreatic trypsin inhibitor (APROTININ). It protects against the trypsin-mediated premataure activation of ENZYME PRECURSORS in the PANCREAS. Mutations in the SPINK1 gene are associated with CHRONIC PANCREATITIS. [from MeSH]

Genetic Linkage

The co-inheritance of two or more non-allelic GENES due to their being located more or less closely on the same CHROMOSOME. [from MeSH]

Chronic disease

Diseases which have one or more of the following characteristics: they are permanent, leave residual disability, are caused by nonreversible pathological alteration, require special training of the patient for rehabilitation, or may be expected to require a long period of supervision, observation, or care. (Dictionary of Health Services Management, 2d ed) [from MeSH]
