RefSeq annotates one representative transcript (NM included in AceView variant.b), but Homo sapiens cDNA sequences in GenBank, dbEST, Trace and SRA, filtered against clone rearrangements, coaligned on the genome and clustered in a minimal non-redundant way by the manually supervised AceView program, support at least 11 spliced variants.

Expression: According to AceView, this gene is expressed at high level, 1.9 times the average gene in this release. The sequence of this gene is defined by 220 GenBank accessions from 206 cDNA clones, some from pnet (seen 23 times), testis (21), breast (11), brain (9), leukopheresis (9), breast carcinoma (7), lung (7) and 68 other tissues. We annotate structural defects or features in 5 cDNA clones.
Alternative mRNA variants and regulation: The gene contains 23 distinct introns (22 gt-ag, 1 gc-ag). Transcription produces 13 different mRNAs, 11 alternatively spliced variants and 2 unspliced forms. There are 6 probable alternative promotors, 5 non overlapping alternative last exons and 3 validated alternative polyadenylation sites (see the diagram). The mRNAs appear to differ by truncation of the 5' end, truncation of the 3' end, presence or absence of 2 cassette exons, overlapping exons with different boundaries, splicing versus retention of one intron. 308 bp of this gene are antisense to spliced gene sihuya, raising the possibility of regulated alternate expression.
2 variants were isolated in vivo, despite the fact that they are predicted targets of nonsense mediated mRNA decay (NMD).
Efficacy of translation may be reduced by the presence of a shorter translated product (uORF) initiating at an AUG upstream of the main open reading frame (in variant bAug10, fAug10, gAug10).
Function: There are 2 articles specifically referring to this gene in PubMed. Proteins are expected to localize in integral to membrane. No phenotype has yet been reported to our knowledge: this gene's in vivo function is yet unknown.
Protein coding potential: 9 spliced mRNAs putatively encode good proteins, altogether 8 different isoforms (4 complete, 1 COOH complete, 3 partial), some containing Cytochrome B561, N terminal domain [Pfam]. The remaining 4 mRNA variants (2 spliced, 2 unspliced; 2 partial) appear not to encode good proteins. Finally proteins from this gene may be modulated by acetylation; phosphorylation; ubiquitination, as detailed at PhosphoSite.
