RefSeq annotates 2 representative transcripts (NM included in AceView variants .a and .c), but Homo sapiens cDNA sequences in GenBank, dbEST, Trace and SRA, filtered against clone rearrangements, coaligned on the genome and clustered in a minimal non-redundant way by the manually supervised AceView program, support at least 36 spliced variants.

Expression: According to AceView, this gene is expressed at high level, 2.8 times the average gene in this release. The sequence of this gene is defined by 324 GenBank accessions from 291 cDNA clones, some from brain (seen 36 times), lung (14), kidney (9), thymus (9), eye (8), hypothalamus (8), uterus (8) and 105 other tissues. We annotate structural defects or features in 10 cDNA clones.
Alternative mRNA variants and regulation: The gene contains 50 distinct introns (49 gt-ag, 1 gc-ag). Transcription produces 41 different mRNAs, 36 alternatively spliced variants and 5 unspliced forms. There are 6 probable alternative promotors, 6 non overlapping alternative last exons and 12 validated alternative polyadenylation sites (see the diagram). The mRNAs appear to differ by truncation of the 5' end, truncation of the 3' end, presence or absence of 29 cassette exons, overlapping exons with different boundaries. 323 bp of this gene are antisense to spliced gene swokley, raising the possibility of regulated alternate expression.
7 variants were isolated in vivo, despite the fact that they are predicted targets of nonsense mediated mRNA decay (NMD).
Efficacy of translation may be reduced by the presence of a shorter translated product (uORF) initiating at an AUG upstream of the main open reading frame (in variant cAug10, dAug10, vcAug10).
Function: There are 9 articles specifically referring to this gene in PubMed. Functionally, the gene has been tested for association to a disease (Hypertension). Proteins are expected to have molecular functions (ATP binding, nucleoside-triphosphatase activity, nucleotide binding) and to localize in various compartments (cytoplasm, membrane, nucleolus, nucleus). Putative protein interactors have been described (CRMP1, RPL5ANDSNORD21ANDSNORA66, TTF2).
Protein coding potential: 30 spliced mRNAs putatively encode good proteins, altogether 29 different isoforms (17 complete, 3 COOH complete, 9 partial), some containing domains ATPase family associated with various cellular activities (AAA), ATPase family associated with various cellular activities (AAA), AAA domain (dynein-related subfamily) [Pfam], some transmembrane domains, a peroxisomal domain [Psort2]. The remaining 11 mRNA variants (6 spliced, 5 unspliced; 6 partial) appear not to encode good proteins. Finally proteins from this gene may be modulated by acetylation; phosphorylation, as detailed at PhosphoSite.
