Search Features in GTR: What's New!

GTR's search feature has been updated to include improvements to the search interface, search logic, filters, and Advanced search that will make it easier to find a test or laboratory of interest.

GTR home page & search box redesign

Simple search box allows the user to enter multiple terms to build the query

Type and select from the autosuggest menu one or more terms in the search box, press 'Enter' or click 'Search'

A simple search box allows the user to enter one or more terms: gene symbol, condition name, lab name, or any term or phrase. When entering a gene symbol, condition name, or lab name into the search box, select the most appropriate option from the autosuggest menu or continue typing your term or phrase. Press Enter or click the Search button to run the search.

Tabs removed from search box on home page

Search box tabs

On the GTR home page, the tabs on the search box allowing specific searches have been removed.

  • All GTR
  • Human Tests
  • Microbe Tests
  • Genes
  • Conditions/Phenotypes
  • Labs
  • GeneReviews

Search box dropdown menu removed

Search box dropdown menu

On all GTR pages (search results, lab, condition, gene, and test pages), the dropdown menu to the left of the search box which enabled the search for specific records in GTR has been removed.

  • All GTR
  • Human Tests
  • Microbe Tests
  • Genes
  • Conditions/Phenotypes
  • Labs

GeneReviews now has its own search box on the GTR home page. If the user selects a term from the autosuggest menu, a specific GeneReviews record in Bookshelf will be retrieved. If the term or phrase does not match a single GeneReviews record, then the search results in Bookshelf for that query will be displayed.

Search Results

Tests

A user performing a search query will see a list of tests in the search results, as well as information related to these tests: labs, conditions, and genes.

By default, search results display genetic tests. If there are any matches to microbe tests in GTR, they can be viewed by clicking on the link in the Test type filter on the left, e.g., 'See TEST_COUNT microbe tests for this search', where TEST_COUNT is the count of microbe tests that match the query. Genetic and microbe tests

Search for phrase Warfarin response (A) shows the search results page with the following features shown in the image below.

  • Search term, condition 'Warfarin response' (A).
  • The list of tests with laboratory information is displayed in a table with count of conditions, genes and methods; result count is shown above the table (B).
  • Link to 'See all labs' (C) will open a popup with the list of labs (C).
  • The summary box at the top includes links to the condition page in GTR for the condition 'Warfarin response', synonyms, and associated genes (D).
  • For tests that have been selected with the compare icon, click the compare button to open a popup with the list of tests to compare. Click 'Show comparison' in the popup to open the comparison page (E). See Compare tests
  • Download the GTR data for all or a subset of tests. Click the checkbox to select a test for which to download data. Clicking the checkbox at the top to select all tests on the page. If no tests are selected, then all tests in the result set will be downloaded (F). See Download
  • Use the filters in the filter panel such as method used in the test, certifications, and location of the laboratory to narrow down the list of tests.

Search results page

Test Accession ID or Test Accession ID / Version

When the search query is a Test Accession ID (GTR000######) or Accession ID with version (GTR000######.#), the result is the test page corresponding to the accession ID or specific version of the test respectively.

Labs

In the search results, below the count of tests, you can view the list of labs that match your query by clicking the link 'See all labs'. This will open a popup with a list of labs.

See all labs

In the lab popup:

  • Clicking on the lab link shows the lab page in GTR.
  • Clicking on the link for the count of tests shows the tests for that lab matching the query. If here are no tests for the lab, then the count of tests that match your search will be zero. Although the lab has no registered tests in GTR, there is data in the lab record or associated metadata that matches the user's query.

Summary Box

When a user selects a term or phrase (gene, condition, lab) from the autosuggest dropdown menu in the GTR search box or types in a term/phrase that corresponds to an exact match for a record in GTR, a "Summary box" will display showing information about the term. The results are for tests related to the query.

Laboratory name

If the term is a laboratory name or identifier, the summary box will display the information for the lab. The results on the page will show tests for that lab, if any.

Conditions

If the term is a disease name or identifier, the summary box will display information about the disease, including a link to the disease page in GTR, synonyms, and associated genes.

Summary box for 'Prader-Willi syndrome'

Genes

If the term is a gene symbol, the summary box will display information about the gene, including gene aliases, gene ID, chromosomal location and associated conditions.

Download

Download test data to a file

The 'Download' button at the top right of the search results will allow the user to download the GTR data for all or a subset of tests. The user can select a test for which to download data by clicking on the checkbox next to the name of the test. If no tests are selected, then all tests in the result set will be downloaded. Alternatively, the user can select one or more tests for download.

File format

The downloaded text file is in tab-delimited format and can be imported into a spreadsheet. The 'tab' delimiter is used to separate values between fields and the 'pipe' (|) delimiter is used to separate multiple values in the same field; e.g., genes, test methods, etc

Fields

The following fields are included in the downloaded data file:

  • Test ID
  • Test name
  • Lab Name
  • Lab ID
  • Country
  • Test URL
  • Purpose of the test
  • Target population
  • Order URL
  • Specimen source
  • Test code
  • CPT code
  • Test performance location(s)
  • Major method category
  • Method category
  • Test method
  • Analytical validity
  • Conditions/phenotypes
  • Name of what is tested
  • Clinical utility
  • Clinical validity
  • Test development
  • Variant(s)
  • RefSeq:relevant exons

Filters

Several filters are available that allow the user to further narrow the search results to find the test of interest. The filters are included in a set of panels on the left.

  • Test type
  • Test target
  • Gene
  • Condition
  • Lab
  • Test purpose
  • Test method
  • Specimen type
  • Certification
  • Lab service
  • Lab location

GTR search filters

Filter panels are collapsed by default, except for the Test type, Genes, Conditions, and Labs. By default, search results display genetic tests. If there are any matches to microbe tests in GTR, they can be viewed by clicking on the link in the Test type filter on the left, 'See # microbe tests for this search', where # is the count of microbe tests that match the query.

Once a filter is selected, it will display at the top of the page, under 'Filters applied'. There are 2 options available to clear selected filters: Reset all which displays at the top, and Reset which will display on panels where filters have been selected.

Counts of filter items will be shown. These counts will be recalculated if other filters are selected.

Filter selections

Filter logic

  • Within a filter category, more than one filter can be selected; e.g., Test specimen: plasma, peripheral (whole) blood
  • Within the same filter category, the Boolean logic is 'OR'; e.g., Test specimen: plasma OR peripheral (whole) blood. The exception is for Genes and Conditions which support Boolean logic AND and OR. For Genes, clicking the 'Change' link below 'Finding tests for all genes selected' (default setting) will change the logic to Finding tests for any genes selected'; by default, the Boolean option is 'AND'. The same feature is available for Conditions.
  • Between filter categories, Boolean logic is 'AND'; e.g., Test specimen: plasma OR peripheral (whole) blood AND Test method: Targeted variant analysis

Test targets

Tests can be filtered by the number of genes in the test-target field or the nature of the test-target field.

  • Single gene tests
  • Panels (2-10 genes)
  • Panels (>11 genes)
  • Exomes (value for test target of type 'chromosomal region / mitochondrion' is 'Whole exome' OR the test name includes 'exome')
  • Genomes (value for test target of type 'chromosomal region / mitochondrion' is 'Human genome' OR the test name includes 'genome')

Genes

  • The gene filter will includes the list of genes that are in the result set.
  • If gene count is less than or equal to 100, the gene list is displayed, otherwise the gene count is shown. If there are no genes in tests in the result set, then the gene filter is not shown.
  • The Boolean logic for the Genes filter supports AND and OR. Clicking the 'Change' link below 'Finding tests for all genes selected' (default setting) will change the logic to Finding tests for any genes selected'; by default, the Boolean option is 'AND'.
  • The user can select one or more genes in the filter or enter a gene symbol in the text box and select from the genes that display.

Conditions

  • The Conditions filter will include the list of conditions that are in the result set.
  • If the condition count is less than or equal to 100, the list of conditions is displayed, otherwise the count of conditions is shown.
  • The Boolean logic for the Conditions filter supports AND and OR. Clicking the 'Change' link below 'Finding tests for all conditions selected' (default setting) will change the logic to 'Finding tests for any conditions selected'; by default, the Boolean option is 'AND'.
  • The user can select one or more conditions in the filter or start typing the condition name in the text box and select from the conditions that display.

Labs

  • The labs filter will include the list of labs from the test search results.
  • The user can narrow down the list of tests by selecting labs in the filter.
