|Populus fremontii x Populus angustifolia
|Plants of ~1 m height were distributed into two large ebb and flow hydroponic tubs, one receiving 5 mM nitrogen (N+) and the other with 0.125 mM nitrogen (N-). Plants were maintained as described in Growth Protocol for 4 weeks prior to sampling
|Rooted cuttings, 10-15 cm in height, were transferred into aerated nutrient solution containing 5 mM nitrogen. Distilled water was added daily as needed to maintain a constant nutrient volume. Nutrient solution was replaced weekly, and a pH of 5.8±0.3 was maintained by daily additions of 2N KOH or 2N HCl.

|The data were analyzed with Microarray Suite version 5.0 (MAS 5.0) using Affymetrix default analysis settings and global scaling as normalization method.
