Extraction protocol |
Whole brains were removed and placed in RNAlater (Ambion) overnight. Brains were sliced into 150 μm-thick vibratome sections and the striatum including the nucleus accumbens was excised with thin needles. Total RNA was prepared with Rneasy RNA Mini kit (Qiagen) and its quality was assessed on RNA LabChips (Agilent).

Biotinylated cRNA were prepared according to the standard Affymetrix protocol from 2 ug total RNA (Expression Analysis Technical Manual, 2001, Affymetrix).

Hybridization protocol |
Following fragmentation, 10 ug of cRNA were hybridized for 16 hr at 45C on mouse 430A 2.0 arrays. Chips were washed and stained in the Affymetrix Fluidics Station 400.

Scan protocol |
GeneChips were scanned using the Hewlett-Packard GeneArray Scanner G2500A.

Data processing |
Analysis of array data was performed using the R 2.4.1/Bioconductor 1.9 (Gentleman et al. 2004) . Data was normalized and expression values were computed using the gcrma method.
