Mixia osmundae

A simple septate basidiomycete, infecting fern

Lineage: Eukaryota[2985]; Fungi[1343]; Dikarya[1241]; Basidiomycota[304]; Pucciniomycotina[39]; Mixiomycetes[1]; Mixiales[1]; Mixiaceae[1]; Mixia[1]; Mixia osmundae[1]
The fern pathogen Mixia osmundae produce exogenous blastospores on fern leaves. Until 1995 the spores were mistaken for ascospores but TEM micrographs and molecular evidence showed that this fungus infact belongs the phylum Basidiomycota and not the Ascomycota. The fungus has no close relatives and is classified in the class Mixiomycetes by itself.
