Lineage: Eukaryota[4304]; Viridiplantae[476]; Streptophyta[413]; Embryophyta[410]; Tracheophyta[406]; Spermatophyta[403]; Magnoliopsida[395]; eudicotyledons[307]; Gunneridae[307]; Pentapetalae[307]; rosids[197]; fabids[111]; Fagales[21]; Fagaceae[5]; Quercus[3]; Quercus suber[1]
Quercus suber is an evergreen oak that is the primary source for cork. It is native to southwest Europe and northwest Africa. The trees live from 150 to 200 years. The first harvest is from a 25 year old tree. The tree can produce approximately 12 harvests. All harvests are performed by highly skilled human labor by cutting off the bark using a small axe.
