Prunus mume, domesticated in China more than 3,000 years ago as the important fruit and ornamental plant. Though the common names are 'Chinese plum' and 'Japanese apricot', it is more closely related to the apricot. The tree starts flowering in mid-winter, the fruits ripen in early summer.
